From a life as a mercenary soldier for the Turks, gambling, and other vices, St. Camillus of Lellis lived a dissolute life. Seeking a cure for his persistent leg ailment, he encountered Franciscan kindness, leading him to Rome's Hospital for Incurables. Though initial struggles with temperament and vice resulted in dismissal, a pivotal moment of grace prompted a radical transformation, bringing him back to the hospital where he rose to become its director. Inspired by Christ's call to serve the sick, he founded the Order of Clerics Regular, Ministers to the Sick, dedicating himself and his followers to the care of the afflicted, especially during times of plague. This biography traces his path from a repentant soldier to a priest, navigating the establishment of his order, enduring chronic illness, and demonstrating extraordinary charity and self-sacrifice. His work culminated in the recognition of his order by Popes Sixtus V, Gregory XIV, and Clement VIII.
